The report describes the results of a study of the relationships between accident rates and traffic and roadway elements of urban streets. The research was performed as a special pilot study by the Georgia Tech Vehicular Collision Research Team. Thirty one-mile sections of arterial and collector streets in Atlanta, Georgia, were selected for study. By means of aerial photographs and field surveys, data were collected on ten roadway and traffic characteristics. Rates of single-vehicle, off-road, fixed-object accidents and total accidents (all types) were determined by an examination of police accident records for four years. Correlation and factor analyses, simple linear regression, and stepwise multiple linear regression were used to establish relationships between roadway and traffic characteristics and accident rates.
