The mission of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is to reduce the number of traffic deaths and the number and severity of injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents in the United States. Much of NHTSA's work is done in cooperation with the States. For both NHTSA and the States, the State traffic records systems are the primary source of information used to identify problems related to accidents, to develop programs to eliminate the problems, and to measure the effectiveness of those safety programs.
