The Transportation Systems Center (TSC), on behalf of the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), initiated a project to assess, demonstrate and document the noise reduction potential of optimized commercially-available exhaust, intake, and fan subsystems on a typical diesel-powered city bus. These subsystems were to be retrofitable designs in current vehicle fleets while maintaining public safety and established vehicle exhaust emission regulations. This report, in response to this effort, is intended to provide a reference for manufacturers, owners, and operators to consult for recommendations or instructions on installing a proven noise-reduction kit. It provides an insight into the causes of diesel-powered bus noise and demonstrates an effective means for its reduction. Appendixes give standard noise measurement procedures, acoustic and performance test data on the various design configurations, and service information on sound attenuation kits.
