An assessment of the future possibilities for the helicopter is presented, within the broad spectrum of all transport systems. Special attention is paid to weight reduction by extensive use of composites such as Kevlar fiber reinforced plastics. Crash resistance, ergonomic configuration optimization, aerodynamic improvements, vibration reduction, specific fuel consumption and noise reduction are discussed. Examples from the BO 105 and BK 117 helicopters are given. By the end of the century the helicopter is expected to reach the discussed development limits.
