Extensive work with the ASR-4 radar provided basic data that has been analyzed to produce a method that flight controllers can use to collect data on the quantity, size and altitude of birds migrating aloft. A synthesis of radar data collected to date demonstrated the importance of prevailing wind patterns in the evolution of bird migration patterns throughout the continental United States and the world. Analysis of all the direct visual data and radar data gathered with the WSR-57 radar resulted in an updated method of counting the number of migrating birds aloft in much the same manner as weather radar operators measure the intensity of rain storms. A preliminary draft of a manual on radar ornithology to be used by radar operators in the military, the Federal Aviation Agency, and the National Weather Service to detect, identify, and monitor bird movements which might prove hazardous to aircraft has been completed.
