Beach mobility tests were conducted by the U.S. Army with three cargo handling vehicles to: validate the Beach Mobility Model; examine the effects of tire treads on sand mobility; evaluate the GOER vehicle mobility. Tests showed that aggressive treads have deleterious effects on sand mobility and an additional term was applied to the prediction model to account for tread aggressivness for bias ply tires. No further adjustments were necessary to the model because of its close agreement with the test data. The GOER vehicle showed excellent sand mobility. An analytical approach is presented which predicts the performance of tri-axle vehicles which have front/rear tire differences. (Author)
