The range at which U.S. Navy pilots could detect and recognize olive-drab vehicles parked on a light-brown, graded strip in the desert was measured in flight tests conducted in 1962. Scripps Visibility Laboratory measured light transmission through the aircraft windscreen and the atmosphere. Vehicle and background brightness measurements were also made. These measurements were used as inputs to a mathematical model to compute detection and recognition range. The report is useful principally for the field data presented, and for the historical information on mathematical modeling of the visual process. (Author)
