This report presents the latest available information on lightning hazards to jet aircraft. Included are the temperature and altitude range where most strokes are encountered, a brief discussion of the type of damage likely to be incurred, and a somewhat more detailed look into the possibility of fuel-tank explosions due to lightning and electrostatic discharges. It appears that, while the possibility of such explosions is small, aircraft using JP-4 fuel are generally more vulnerable to this hazard than those using gasoline or kerosene. It is concluded from this and other hazards associated with JP-4 that jet passenger aircraft, at least, should use kerosene fuels where possible. (Author)
