Freight transports by railway are divided into (i) the 'main transport' which by definition is a railway transport, and (ii) the 'feeder transports' which can be made by railway or by road. In the former case private sidings are required, and the loading/unloading of railcars is carried out by the sender/receiver on their premises. When the feeder transport is made by road, three main types of freight put very different demands on the handling technique - loose bulk, unit loads such as containers and flats, and small packets (piecegoods). The costs of freight transport by road and by railway varies widely depending on, in the first place, the distance of the main transport and the feeder transport, respectively, the package type, technique and number of handling operations, and the shipment size. The results of the estimations of the relative costs are made in this study.
