This report presents the results and a description of the 1987 General Aviation Activity and Avionics Survey. The survey was conducted during 1988 by the FAA to obtain information on the activity and avionics of the United States registered general aviation aircraft fleet, the dominant component of civil aviation in the U.S. The survey was based on a statistically selected sample of about 11.1 percent of the general aviation fleet. A response rate of 61.1 percent was obtained. Survey results are based upon responses but are expanded upward to represent the total population. Survey results revealed that during 1987 and estimated 33.4 million hours of flying time were logged and 93.7 million operations were performed by the 217,183 active general aviation aircraft in the U.S. fleet. The mean annual flight time per aircraft was 148.4 hours. The active aircraft represented about 81.2 percent of the registered general aviation fleet. The report contains breakdowns of these and other statistics by manufacturer/model group, aircraft type, state and region of based aircraft, and primary use. Also included are fuel consumption, lifetime airframe hours, avionics, engine hours, and miles flown estimates, tables for detailed analysis of the avionics capabilities of the general consumed by the Ga fleet. Keywords included: Aircraft, Aircraft activity, Aircraft use, Avionics, Fuel consumption, General Aviation, Hours flown, and Miles flown. (rh)
