The objective of the study was to review current practice with regard to carbon dioxide scrubbing in diving bells. The work was initiated because it was considered that insufficient information was available to set design guidelines and performance criteria for this equipment. At the present time no authoritative and comprehensive document is available to assist in the specification, design and construction of carbon dioxide control systems. Indeed, until the publication of the Proceedings of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Winter 1982 Meeting(1-10), there were few reliable scientific data relating to the performance of absorption type scrubbers under hyperbaric conditions. Similarly, the ambient CO2 levels in diving bells are not accurately known, partly as a result of instrumentation and sampling difficulties. (Copyright (c) CIRIA/UEG 1986.)
