Some early results on an ESA comparative study are presented. The investigations of the last meters of the final approach of the rendezvous and the mating process proper are focused on. Final approach problems are presented and discussed. The contact phase for docking and the capture, the transfer and final contact phases for berthing are analyzed. Criteria to assess the reliability of the mating procedures are presented, followed by the trade of docking versus berthing. To illustrate results, realistic cases are considered: Hermes acting as the chaser rendezvousing and mating with a large range of target, from the 4 tones Eureca to the 200 tones Space Station Freedom and including the 20 tones Columbus Free Flyer.
