A study was undertaken to assess the importance of taxis and private hire cars in the development of effective public transport policies. A survey was carried out in 1981 in Basingstoke, England, in which 29 taxi and 31 private hire car drivers were interviewed and details taken of approximately 5,000 taxi hirings and 2,000 private hire car hirings during a one week period. Information was obtained on the number, age, and sex of users, the frequencies with which they travelled by various forms of public transport, and the timing, purpose, means of booking, origin and destination of their journeys. The results were compared with those obtained from an earlier TRRL study done in Northampton. The importance of taxis and private hire cars in the context of public transport provision, particularly bus travel, was considered.
