About 50% of the total energy supplied by the train engine is lost in form of heat due to braking. Regenerative braking recently used in hybride bus seems to be the obvious solution for energy saving. Computerized simulation of regenerative braking proves that considerable fuel economy with use of an adequate energy storage unit is obtained. Another possible source of fuel economy is a more flexible timetable with optimized train velocities. (ERA citation 10:008757)
