The proper operation of an autopilot contributes to economical sailing. In the present paper the authors make use of special steering experiments on the large twin-screw/twin-rudder passenger ferry 'Tor Britannia' to demonstrate the use of the linear combination of the mean square deviations in heading and rudder angles as a loss function, suitable for autopilot design. It is shown that this loss function is consistent with the description of rate of fuel consumption. The analysis of the experiments furnished a value of the weighting factor indicating that heading deviations are penalized five times more than are rudder angles.
