In order to be able to investigate various aspects of the complex Air Traffic Control (ATC) system of the future, a real-time ATC simulation facility has been constructed at NLR. The ATC automation environment of this simulator is provided by CTAS, the Center/TRACON Automation System, developed by the NASA Ames Research Center. For the simulation of air traffic, radar observations and data link, the NLR ATC Research Simulator (NARSIM) is used. The facility can be used at various levels of automation, ranging from conventional, 'manual' ATC to fully automatic control. For the latter, CTAS has been extended with various decision and control algorithms, dealing with tasks normally executed by the air traffic controller.
