Data on road train delays due to various tyes of mechanical failures and derailments and on the duration of these delays were collected for a total of 1,065 trains operating over a single main-line division during a two-month period. These delays were classified by major type (brake, coupler, and other types of failures-not including engine failures) and by possible causal factors (train length, trailing tonnage, and track profile) operative at the time of the failure.
