Statistical methods to predict large roll motions are investigated. Characteristics of extreme motions are studied to assess their importance for the occurrence of critical roll angles, and existing methods, used to predict statistics of nonlinear roll motion, are reviewed. A new approach is proposed for the prediction of large roll motions in the following seas. The work supplements present and previous research done in the Department of Naval Architecture at the University of California at Berkeley to predict large motions of floating vessels.
