Four representative brands of Raised Reflective Roadway Markers were evaluated for one year. Reflectivity of the markers from illumination of automobile headlamps was measured periodically using a Luckiesh Taylor Brightness Meter. The reflectivity of all brands dropped immediately to a mean of about 50% of the new reflectivity, then varied above and below this value depending on weather and fouling. The loss of markers from the roadway was evaluated. The epoxy adhesives were satisfactory for plastic markers, all losses were due to failure of the asphalt roadbed under the markers. Failure of the plastic markers was negligable. The ceramic markers suffered drastic loss of the reflective elements. This report also contains a preliminary report Highway Lane Marking with Reflective Materials. (Author)
