The estimation of the contribution made by motor vehicles to the atmospheric burden of pollutants depends critically upon the accuracy with which the emissions of a representative sample of vehicles operating over a wide range of real road conditions are known. In order to obtain such data, a comprehensive program was devised which included tests based on the Economic Commission for Europe Regulation 15. This project formed part of an overall program commissioned by the Department of Transport (DT(p)) in which the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) also participated. MIRA procured 204 gasoline engined cars from various sources such as garages, hire companies and privately owned vehicles. The 204 cars were tested by MIRA in the as-received condition in accord with the ECE R15-03 schedule; sixty-four of these cars were then tuned and re-tested. The Mini-CVS proportional sampler system has been thoroughly tested and validated against the normal full-size CVS as used in both the US (Environmental Protection Agency) and the recent '04' series of amendments to the ECE R15 test procedures.
