The specification of essential visual cues in contact flight operations is important to pilot training, flight display design, and airport visual configuration design. A landing display has been developed that uses a small digital computer to generate a graphic electronic display of visual information necessary to land an airplane. Such a display will permit research to determine what aspects of the visual environment in flight are essential, what orientation of the display elements is most beneficial, and what symbology is most easily used.
