The report presents the results of sea trials of HMCS BRAS D'OR, a 200 ton open-ocean hydrofoil ship, with particular emphasis on behaviour in rough water. These trials have demonstrated the ability of a 200 ton hydrofoil to maintain high speed at least through sea state 5, and to operate hullborne with the seakeeping qualities of a destroyer-escort, thus validating the basic concept. Many practical design lessons have been learned from the trials, and the paper attempts to integrate these by outlining preliminary studies towards the design of a possible succeeding class of naval hydrofoil ships.
