On January 4, 1972, a National Airlines, Inc., Boeing 747-135, on a scheduled flight from Miami International Airport, Miami, Florida, to Los Angeles International Airport, Los Angeles, California, encountered one jolt of sharp-gust convective turbulence near Lake Charles, Louisiana, at FL 310. During the abrupt encounter, 38 passengers and four stewardesses received injuries which ranged from minor to serious. The seatbelt sign was on at the time and had been on for some time prior to the turbulence encounter. Announcements to this effect had been made by various crewmembers. The flight continued on to Los Angeles International Airport without further incident. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was an encounter with sharp-gust convective turbulence during flight in instrument meteorological conditions, while numerous occupants were unsecured by seatbelts even though the seatbelt sign was lighted.
