The Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) spacecraft structure is composed of two main parts: the service module and the payload module. These components follow different qualification paths until the final integration and testing of the system. The service module structure was conceived as an independent subsystem with the simplest interface specification. The activities performed on the service module in the phase C/D, that permitted the qualification of the structure, and the corresponding design development that validates the structural concept of this subsystem, are presented.
