On January 10, 1972, the 584-foot-long Tank Barge I.O.S. 3301 completed discharging its cargo of gasoline and furnace oil at Port Jefferson, N.Y., and was ballasted to permit turning around in the shallow harbor. As the last mooring line was being released, the vessel suddenly broke almost completely in half, and the two ends sank to the bottom. The barge was less than 1 year old. The report contains the action taken by the National Transportation Safety Board in determining the probable cause of the casualty and in making recommendations to prevent its recurrence. The report also contains the Marine Board of Investigation report and the action taken by the Commandant, U.S. Coast Guard. (Modified author abstract)
