Research has been conducted on one of the most recent problems of space technology -- the problem of creating a closed ecological system (CES) in the cabin of a space ship on the basis of closed cycle of matter. This is connected with the fact that it is advisable to create the foundation for the autotrophic link of the CES, as it is generally believed, on the basis of microscopic unicellular algae. The unification in a single complex of aqueous autotrophic and of aqueous heterotrophic links of the CES will permit an effective system of sustaining life of astronauts in an extended duration space flight. Scientific research in the field of space hydrobiology has been conducted in three directions. (1) Biological justification of the inclusion in the aqueous heterotrophic link of the CES of fishes and of zooplankton. (2) Utilization of wastes and of products of metabolism of plant and animal organisms forming the CES. (3) The effect of space-flight factors and of space itself on the life activities of the organisms -- members of the aqueous heterotrophic link of the CES.
