Two major psychological factors which can adversely affect health, flight performance, and decision making in aviation personnel are discussed: stress and hazardous thought patterns. A model for understanding stress and appraising its effects on human performance in aviation is presented. Understanding the effects of stress on health and performance is essential to designing and implementing proactive preventive programs aimed at promoting and preserving the health and welfare of pilots and enhancing aviation safety.
