The Transportation Research Board (TRB) Section on Multimodal Freight Transportation (A1B00) is pleased to publish this compilation of Freight Transportation Research Needs Statements. Seven of the standing committees within the section have worked over the past 2 years with their respective members to carefully focus their collective attention on pressing research needs. The purpose of such research statements is to bring critical issues in freight transportation to the attention of researchers in the freight area, and to serve as a seedbed for further discussion and analysis from a wider cross-section of freight practitioners. Transportation agencies at all levels of government--federal, state, and local--are increasingly concerned about the continuing growth in the volumes of freight transportation and the adequacy of both privately and publicly owned infrastructure and facilities to accommodate this freight growth now and in the future. A number of these research needs statements address concerns of public agencies in relation to their investments in freight facilities.
