A fast acting valve was designed. A valve motion model was developed. The effects of valve opening and closing time on shock tube performance was determined. Wave shaping was attained by controlling the closing of the valve after initial opening. Driver and valve design trade studies and valve designs were made. Designs were made for automatic loading diaphragm systems. Cryogenic and compressed air driver systems were studied and designed. Heated drivers were designed and studied. The study showed that a fast acting driver valve can be used to tailor the wave shapes to simulate weapon effects without using heated driver gas. The valve can also be used for wave shaping of heated driver gas. Cost and system analyses were performed to compare cryogenic and compressed air drivers as well as heated and unheated drivers. A pebble bed heater system was examined for use with heated drivers. Diesel and electric power systems were examined and compared for reliability and cost. The study also showed that it may be possible to use a pebble bed heater in series with the unheated driver and nozzle to generate heated gas in a single pass. The cost analysis showed that the cost was dominated by the heating the driver gas. Millions of dollars can be saved in operating and capital of costs by using unheated drivers in combination with wave shaping valves.
