The most efficient way to reduce the contribution from road vehicles to the increase of carbon dioxide in the earth atmosphere is to substitute fossil automotive fuels for fuels produced from biomass. Several ways to reduce the specific energy use of the vehicles are available: higher efficiency of engines and transmissions; a more economic style of driving: and tires with less roll resistance. Alternative fuels and engines are briefly reviewed as well as other technical measures.
