It has become increasingly obvious that humans are faced with a number of potentially major environmental problems (e. g. climatic change due to the greenhouse effect, ozone depletion). Observation of the Earth from space is one of the keys to a better understanding of the Earth as a system and is vital to achieving a comprehensive assessment of the influence of man's activities on the environment. Observation of the Earth and its environment has been part of the European Space Agency's (ESA) programs since the advent of the METEOSAT program in the early 1970's. The all-weather satellite ERS-1 will provide a new perspective in the early 1990's for better understanding and monitoring the Earth and its environment. Future plans of the Agency include the following: ERS-2, a follow-on mission to ERS-1; a solid Earth gravity mission; a second generation METEOSAT with improved capabilities; and a series of polar-orbit missions to provide a wide range of observations of the Earth which are particularly important for monitoring and understanding the environment.
