The contribution to the total perceived noise outside an aircraft during takeoff and landing, attributed to engines and the aerodynamics of the aircraft, is considered. Engine noise reduction by design, location of the engine, and by acoustic analysis of the nacelle is discussed. Aerodynamic noise reduction is treated in terms of aircraft design, operational procedures, and aircraft weight. The noise measurement facility used for checking operational procedures and measuring noise levels, is described. Results show that the acoustic noise of commercial aircraft can be significantly reduced.
