Safety has been an important requirement with the objective of identifying, controlling, and/or eliminating those hazards and failure modes that would result in substantial vehicle damage and/or injury or death to occupants during normal operation of the near term electric vehicle (NTEV). Specific requirements have been met through design or selection of available, certified automotive components. Analysis and tests are included in the vehicle development program to confirm that the car delivered to DOE is safe for extended evaluation. Safety considerations are divided into four areas, which are discussed in detail. (ERA citation 07:002091)
