The choices concerning the architecture of the image processor for target recognition and terminal guidance with fiber optic guided missile are summarized. This missile carries an infrared imager whose image is transmitted through an optical fiber to the control station where it is processed for use by the operator. In the missile control station, the image processing assembly provides a decision aid to the operator who only intervenes, in the new concept, for high level actions. The splitting-up of the processing to be performed by the processor shows the specificity of the architecture of the real time processings. Mission control is achieved through high level processings and artificial intelligence techniques are used to complement the conventional algorithms. The goals, the processing to be produced, and constraints of the project for the image processors are presented.
