The Solid Surface Combustion Experiment (SSCE) and the Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS) are experiments to be flown in the middeck of the Shuttle, Discovery, on the STS-43 mission by the Office of Space Science and Applications (OSSA). The objective of the SSCE is to study the physical and chemical mechanisms of flame propagation over solid fuels in the absence of gravity-driven buoyant or externally-imposed airflows. The objective of the SAMS is to provide low-level acceleration data for the SSCE, the Protein Crystal Growth (PCG) experiment, and the crew treadmill exerciser.
