The National Park Service proposes a new conceptual master plan for Olympic National Park to establish developmental patterns and management goals. Environmental impacts include: Improved visitor information-orientation programs through cooperatively managed facilities; improved backcountry experience and reduced ecological degradation due to de-emphasis of development in the interior of the park; and improved access and reduced traffic congestion due to highway bypasses outside of the park, new shuttle bus transportation systems, road paving, and reopening old road to Hurricane Ridge. Adverse effects include: Acquisition of private lands which will be removed from timber production or private use as a result of boundary revisions and road construction outside of the park; and phasing out low-cost cabins at Sol Duc Hot Springs which will reduce the opportunity for some visitors to stay overnight in the park.
