The report analyzes information that may prove useful in assessing the market for utilitarian cycling or in designing effective strategies for shifting travelers to the bicycle mode. Using data from the Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Commission's 1981 household travel survey, it presents information on bicycle use patterns by trip, personal, and household characteristics. These data are compared to similar measures for the survey population as a whole, as well as to cyclist characteristics found in other studies. The results are then used to develop a profile of cyclists and to identify potential markets where increased bicyclce use might be encouraged.
