Space biology is defined as an independent area of biology dealing with three basic problems: The characteristics of the vital activity and behavior of terrestrial organisms in outer space or on rockets; The presence distribution, characteristics and evolution of living matter, possibly from another planet, in the universe; and the biological principles and methods for constructing an artificial environment in spaceships. This survey outlines the progress of Soviet space biology and notes important directions for its further development. (Author)
