Two modified Model S6W300 1-ton power wagons equipped with low-pressure 17.00 x 16 highflotation tires were used on all types of roads and trails on adjoining areas of snow, ice, and frozen ground at McMurdo, Antarctica, during the summer seasons of FY-64 and FY-56. One was used as a camp service vehicle to haul supplies and personnel between McMurdo Station on Ross Island and the NCEL camp on the Ross Ice Shelf, a distance of about 6 miles. The other was used to support snow-compaction studies on the Ross Ice Shelf and at Williams Field. Both power wagons performed well with a minimum of repair and maintenance, and no special skills were required for their operation and upkeep. They could be driven over all types of roads and trails, including 1-day-old equipment-packed trails on deep snow and icy roads with grades up to 20%. During Deep Freeze 65 the S6W300 power wagon equipped with 17.00 x 16 tires was adopted by the U. S. Naval Support Forces, Antarctica, as an interim standard light-duty vehicle for McMurdo Station.
