Data from NHTSAs Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) have been used for this Research Note. Young-driver-involved crashes are those in which the driver of at least one of the vehicles or motorcycles involved in the crashes was driven or operated by someone 15 to 20 years old. Data for licensed drivers and the definition of roadway type (rural or urban) are provided by the Federal Highway Administration. U.S. population data is provided by the U.S. Census Bureau.Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15- to 20-year-olds, based on 2005 figures that are the latest mortality data currently available from the National Center for Health Statistics. For the purposes of this document, the term young driver is defined as a person 15 to 20 years old who was driving a vehicle or operating a motorcycle.
