The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, at the request of the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) and with guidance from the National Academies’ Standing Committee on Aerospace Medicine and the Medicine of Extreme Environments, established a committee to review NASA’s Evidence Reports on Human Health Risks. These evidence reports focus on human health risks for long-duration and exploration spaceflights. This 2017 letter report is the fifth and final report in the series of five National Academies’ reports that reviewed the more than 30 NASA evidence reports (IOM, 2014, 2015, 2016). This report also builds on the 2008 IOM report, Review of NASA’s Human Research Program Evidence Books: A Letter Report, which assessed the process for developing NASA’s evidence reports and provided an initial and brief review of NASA’s original evidence report.
