An integrated optical circuit is a transparent substrate upon which different types of electro-optic components and optical waveguide interconnections are fabricated. Some components which might be contained in IOC's are optical sources, detectors, amplifiers, logic elements, switches, filters, directional couplers, and fan-in/fan-out elements. The avionics systems on three representative naval aircraft (A-7E, S-3A and F-14A) were studied to identify design trends, degree of system integration, and the areas in which IOC technology might apply. On the basis of information obtained in the aircraft survey, a prediction of 1980 avionics-system requirements was developed. A literature search was conducted to determine the extent and objectives of current developments in IOC technology, and obtain a data base for predicting trends in IOC research and avionics design. On-going development programs related to avionics system design are identified and briefly described. The outcomes of these programs will affect the avionics system of the future. The IOC technology base which has already been developed and is being expanded leads to the conclusion that useful optical circuits may be available within two to three years.
