On 15 November 1988, the versatile Energiya rocket and space transportation system was successfully launched, and it placed the Buran reusable orbital spacecraft into orbit. A new and important stage in the development of the Soviet Space Program began with that flight. Features that are specific to the development of the Buran spacecraft are discussed. Transport of cargo; ballistics of the Buran flight; reusable vs. disposable rockets; comparison of the U.S. Space Shuttle and Buran; and prospects for future use of Buran are briefly described.
