The model developed in this study is for a single vessel. However, the concept could easily be expanded to include a group of vessels operating together. The interaction between the vessel and the trawling gear has been developed and analyzed on the basis of experimentation and the application of engineering principles. In the area of trawler resistance and propulsion, a method developed by FAO for estimating the hull resistance of a trawler as a function of speed-length ratio proved to be very helpful. A set of interaction curves was developed for the Point Judith trawlers in order to provide operators with a decision making tool to be used in the proper matching of gear and vessel. For a specific trawler, it was shown how the efficiency of the propeller could be increased from about 18% to 30%, and how propeller thrust could be increased by 20% using a controllable pitch propeller. The increased thrust due to the installation of a controllable pitch propeller was shown to increase the fish catch rate by 18% under certain conditions.
