Twenty traffic officers previously involved in preventible accidents during pursuits were matched with a group of officers of similar age and experience who had not had this type of accident (accident-free). Both groups drove an instrumented car at high speeds on a closed track, at which time physiological and vehicle control data was recorded. Both groups also were tested on a battery of psychomotor performance tasks. Differences in skills, judgment, and heart-rate profiles under stress were observed to differentiate the two groups. A risk-of-accident index was generated by which 19 of 20 accident participants could be identified, and 17 of 18 accident-free drivers positively excluded. Six of these accident-free drivers were observed to share some discriminating traits with the accident participants, and were presumed to be at higher risk than the others. Implications of these results for screening and training of traffic officers are discussed.
