In 1993, the Federal Highway Administration awarded a series of contracts under their Automated Systems program. The contracts, which totaled 14.1 million, were awarded to 15 separate teams of researchers and were completed in late 1994. These contracts addressed the major issues and risks associated with automated vehicle control on our Nation's highways. The results of these studies indicated that although there area number of major challenges to be faced, there are no major 'show stoppers' to the implementation of Automated Highway Systems. This report is a summary and assessment of the major findings of the Precursor Systems Analyses studies.
