A general discussion of recovery system design philosophy for a ballistic type re-entry vehicle is presented. The importance of the system integration design concept is emphasized. A specific problem of retardation system deployment is reviewed since such considerations are of major concern in the recovery system design. The pre-flight development testing and evaluation of the recovery system is also described as an important design consideration. The NERV (Nuclear Emulsion Recovery Vehicle) is presented as a typical example of an application of these concepts. (Author)
