For eleven years, all the preparation steps of commercial satellites for ESA, firstly, and then on behalf of Arianespace, having their launch on Ariane 1, 2, 3 and then 4, have taken place in the EPCU (French acronym for Guianan space center) at Kourou (French Guiana). The design of these installations was carried out in strict cooperation between the designer, CNES, and the users. This approach was intensified for the future Ariane 5/ELA 3 (French acronym for Ariane launch assembly), with Arianespace being the spokesperson of its clients.
