A technique for the evaluation of the seakeeping performance of destroyer-type ships is presented and applied to four radically different hypothetical designs. The procedure involves first the adoption of suitable criteria of seagoing performance, with the tentative selection of numerical indices related to ship motion. Next to be considered is the determination of the behavior of the four designs in head seas in the North Atlantic Ocean, utilizing linear superposition techniques to evaluate the response of the vessels to different realistic short-crested sea spectra. Calculations are based upon theoretical response amplitude operators obtained by applying strip theory to determine the response of the vessels to regular waves. The final evaluation of seakeeping performance is then obtained in the form of long term probability of not exceeding the stated numerical indices as functions of ship speed.
