This report presents the findings and recommendations on the Verification of Certain ITE Trip Generation Rate Applications in South Dakota. The project reviewed six Super Wal-Marts, two Home Improvement Stores, and one Grocery Store, to determine if the trip generation rates and projected traffic met or exceeded the traffic projections documented in Traffic Impact Studies. Prior to the completion of this study, South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) Traffic Engineers often relied upon the Institute of Transportation (ITE) Trip Generation Manual to determine projected traffic impacts for development of new businesses in South Dakota. The SDDOT needed to verify if the ITE Trip Generation rates for major traffic generating businesses accurately reflected the rates found in rural areas such as South Dakota. Traffic count information and trip generation rates were calculated for each site and compared to the traffic impact studies and the ITE Trip Generation Manual. The signalized intersections reviewed in the various communities as a part of this research project all met at least one MUTCD traffic signal warrant and provided increased safety and convenience for the traveling public. These studies verified that the traffic signal recommendations were all based on sound traffic engineering judgment.
